Salmon Export Market Bringing in the Big Bucks
Norway Leads the Way
Norway, Sweden, Chile, the United Kingdom, and Canada are the top five exporters of fresh or chilled salmon. Norway's seafood export value has increased year over year, reversing a historic drop in value. In 2019, Norway exported approximately 85,106 million metric tons of farmed salmon worldwide, with Europe being the largest importing market.
The Krone's Impact
The continuing devaluation of the krone has led to an increase in the value of salmon. This has made Norwegian salmon more competitive in the global market and has contributed to the increase in exports.
A Class of Its Own
Salmon exports were in a class of their own among Norwegian seafood exports. Norway exported a total of 28 million tonnes of seafood last year, which is 5% less than the previous year. However, the value of seafood exports increased, indicating that salmon is a particularly valuable commodity.
