Washington to serve 25 years in prison

Marcel Washington of Charlotte, North Carolina, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of Anthony Lorenzo Johnson

Marcel Washington of Charlotte, North Carolina, will spend 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the death of Anthony Lorenzo Johnson.

The plea deal was approved by a judge on Tuesday, July 12, 2023. Washington was originally charged with first-degree murder, but the charge was reduced as part of the plea agreement.

Johnson was found dead in the stairwell of a parking garage on the Downtown Mall on July 10, 2022. He had been stabbed multiple times.

Washington was arrested two days later and charged with Johnson's murder. He has been held at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail since his arrest.

The plea deal brings an end to the case, which has been closely followed by the Charlottesville community. Johnson's family has said they are relieved that Washington has been held accountable for his crime.

Washington's sentencing is scheduled for September 12, 2023.
